Historic Vehicle Classification
In Spain a vehicle can be classified as historic if it meets one of these conditions:
- More than 30 years since first registration
- Included in the General Inventory of Movable Property
- A vehicle of special interest due to its uniqueness
Classification is carried out by the relevant town hall or autonomous community and requires a technical report from an authorised official laboratory.
Benefits of Classification
Classified historic vehicles enjoy: exemption from emissions-based driving restrictions (low-emission zones), roadworthiness test every two years instead of annually, reduced or exempt road tax depending on the municipality, and the option to display a historic registration plate.
Roadworthiness Test (ITV) for Historic Vehicles
Historic vehicles undergo an adapted roadworthiness test that takes their original characteristics into account. They are not required to meet current emissions standards or modern safety systems, provided they retain the original equipment from their era of manufacture. Testing is biennial.
Classic Car Insurance
Specific policies for classic vehicles offer agreed-value cover (not market value), protecting your investment. Companies such as Zurich, Allianz and specialists like Classic Car Insurance offer tailored products. The cost is usually lower than for a standard car.
Importing Classics
